Evaluating TV drama

May 1st at 11AM / 0 notes

I think the production taught me a lot about the whole film making process and has definitly taught me the most out of everything on this course so far. It was very stressful but it was enjoyable. However there are a lot of things i would do differently.

Unfortunately there were a few things that really showed up in the final film, the most obvious being the fact we lost all the sound from the boom, which we lost during the export of the film as one of the files was corrupted. The lighting was also fairly rubbish, I think this was due to the location we were filming in, as it was very small and dim, we only had a limited amount of time and lights.

However we spent a lot of time auditioning and rehearsing with the actors from the drama department so they knew exactly what they were doing. This really improved our film as everyone else just used members of the class and I think we had the edge on the acting side of things which also makes it a lot easier to watch if you have believable actors. We also stuck almost completely to the script, so the story made sense.

In conclusion, although I am quite happy with the final film, it could have been so much better. I am gutted we lost the boom sound as it would have made our film sound so much better and more professional. Our actors definitly saved the day. I’m going to try and improve my commuication skills with members of the team and try and motivate them more. I will also do loads more organisation.

started editing yesterday

Mar 23rd at 5AM / 0 notes

most of the people in my post production group were either away or busy doing something else, so i captured the footage and went through it all and named it. i’m not very good with final cut (i’m RUBBSIH) so i was really worried about accidentally deleting the footage or something. ben taught me how to match the sound clips up to the footage, and i actually managed to do it myself afterwards which i was happy with because i even though i still have loads and loads to learn about final cut, i never thought i’d be able to do the simplist thing and i’d sort of managed to do that. i think its all about practice and getting used to the software and hopefully i’ll be able to do a bit more editing, even though its not my job. my team for post production are danielle, the producer whose been on the whole project, brad, who is editing but was also the storyboard artist in preproduction, leo who is sound editor, and toby who is the title designer. theres still quite a lot to think about in post production, as ours is set in a club we need some background music as well as the dialogue, sound effects and it needs to be cut so it is flowing and the audience doesn’t get bored while watching it.

today i’m going to carry on matching the soundclips up with the footage, so when brad isn’t busy (i think he’s working on scotts film as an actor) it’ll be easier for him to get on and edit it. i’ll probably only get a few done today though because it takes me ages to do stuff correctly on final cut

this doesn’t really make much sense so i’ll probably edit it later

Stressful Week

Mar 19th at 4PM / 0 notes

Ok. so.

this past week has been unbelievably hard and stressful, but looking back on it, its probably taught me the most out of everything we’ve done so far and given me loads of motivation to work harder and try and do the best i can do.

We started filming on Wednesday, which i’m not going to lie, was an utter disaster. no one really knew what they were doing, and i think although we all want to try our best and make the project a success, it hard to get your head around everybody having different roles and who you should be paying attention to. We should have done loads more pre-production work, like a more detailed story board, which we could have achieved if me and brad had better communication. we also should have had a more in depth production meeting with the crew before shooting. anyway ben came and saved the day so we actually have good footage from that day, even though it had nothing to do with me.

spent the morning on thurday helping out with bec and nathans film, as extras, which was fun. after lunch i spent a lot of time redrawing the storyboards for the 1st scene, and writing the order that we would shoot the shots in, i also showed rowan, the director of photography, so he knew roughly what was happen too. it made it so so so much easier when we came to shooting. the entire shoot went a lot more smoothly, it still wasn’t perfect but it was a million miles better than wednesday. we got one whole scene done and pick up shots from scene 2, that we had filmed the day before.

its a shame that wednesday went so badly because me and danielle had been putting a lot of work into it. we designed and made up all the costumes, advertised for extras and spent a long time rehearsing with the actors, which really paid off as they gave really good performances, we just didn’t concentrate so much on the more vital areas such as storyboards and shooting schedules. i think i understand a lot more how this whole thing works now, and i really hope i get the opportunity to direct in future.

today (19/3/12) i went back to the cavern to do a few more shots we could use to  bulk out the film and try and make it 10mins long. it also gave me an opportunity to practice the techniques ben taught us in class about depth of field. i took the media pack home continued to practice shooting depth of field and i think i’ve finally got the hang of it at last.

hopefully when we shoot the last scene tomorrow it will go as well or if not better than it did on thursday!
